Central to the operations of S/Y Tossan is the power system. Solar panels and batteries powers all of the electric equipment onboard.
Solar charging
The foundation to it all are the six LG 300N1K-G4 NeON 2 Black solar panels, three on each hull, placed one up front and two towards the rear. The solar panels are 1600 x 1000 mm in size and produce around 300W each. Inside the boat there are two main power systems; 48V and 12V. The panels are charging both systems using controllers; the 12V domestic batteries through a Victron MPPT100/50 smart controller, and the 48V propulsion motor batteries through a Vetus Solar Charger 60A controller.
48V system
The 48V system powers the electrical propulsion engines and all of the 230V outlets and installations such as the oven and stove. The two separate 48V power banks are placed in the rear storage compartments in each hull hosting four (a total of eight) Norrack 250Ah 12V batteries in series.
The Norrack batteries are described like this on voltpower.se (translated using Google Translate):
Developed specifically for the latest electric boats, yachts, motorhomes and solar cells, this highly efficient product uses our Absorbent Glass Mat to create huge energy reserves that can power huge amounts of electrical equipment throughout its long life. Minimal self-discharge makes it perfect for seasonal use and it is completely maintenance-free.
The biggest advantages are
- Perfect for solar cells, electric boats, yachts and high performance motorhomes
- AGM technology provides superior resistance to shock and vibration
- Exceptionally long life: up to eight times the cycle endurance compared to standard batteries (up to 500 cycles at 50% charge level)
- Durable, leak-proof construction
- Perfect for starting and provisioning
Specifications NORRACK DP250AGM:

12V system
To power the navigation lights, DC outlets, pumps, fridge etc there is a 12V system in place. Four 100Ah domestic batteries connected in parallel are securely mounted in the main tunnel between the two hulls.
Inverters
There is a Power Star LW 6000W battery charger/inverter combo in the hull connecting tunnel. The inverter produces 230V powering for example the oven and stove. There is a second inverter 600W/12000W mounted near the Power Star as well.
