S/Y Tossan is well equipped to communicate using VHF, single sideband (SSB) radio, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks. The VHF and SSB radios are to communicate with boats, ships, and coastal services. The onboard Wi-Fi network is used for navigation instruments such as radar and wind monitor as well as for phone/laptop connectivity. To connect to internet there is no satellite service available however S/Y Tossan is equipped with both a Wi-Fi bullet (to access remote Wi-Fi networks) as well as a 4G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) terminal to connect to cellular networks.

All in all, there is no shortage of communication options onboard.

VHF
Very High Frequency (VHF) radio is available for communication with boats, ships and coastal services some 10-30 nautical miles away.

  • Garmin VHF 300i with speaker mounted by starboard pulpit
  • Garmin GHS 10i concted to the VHF 300i located in the starboard pulpit
  • Navicom RT-210 for additional handheld VHF communication (from the sailing dinghy to S/Y Tossan, or as backup)

SSB (Single sideband) radio
Using Single sideband (SSB) radio you can communicate with others much further away than with VHF, a great thing to have if crossing the big oceans.

Wi-Fi / LAN network
One router is the central hub of the onboard Wi-Fi network. This router is connected to multiple other sources to ensure a common experience across instruments, devices, and applications. The AIS (with GPS signal), the radar, and the onboard computer are all connected over this network. To connect to internet either the Wi-Fi bullet can be used or the cellular network connectivity described below. The Wi-Fi bullet can connect S/Y Tossan to Wi-Fi networks far away, such as a coffee shop or restaurant offering free Wi-Fi by the beach when anchoring in the bay.

Cellular network (4G/3G)
Enabling internet access for the onboard Wi-Fi network is a 4G/3G Fixed Wireless Access router in which you can install a cellular network SIM card. This enables S/Y Tossan to leverage cellular connectivity.
