The idea of a life on the ocean in a warm and sunny climate was born a long time ago. It became the dream of a lifetime, and a lifestyle to strive for. With over 10 years of planning, 3 years of self-built construction, and 5 years of further enhancements, S/Y Tossan became the enabler to realise that dream. Unfortunately, cancer closed the door to an extended future. S/Y Tossan has in November 2023 changed owners and this fantastic sailing catamaran will now support their dreams.
S/Y Tossan is a self-built catamaran based on a Kurt Hughes 48 feet catamaran design, built by my super engineer father. Life on water was his dream and passion since getting his first boat back in the 1970’s. Having built, renovated and owned multiple sailboats and catamarans over the years the construction of S/Y Tossan was his greatest achievement.
It all started back in some early 00’s with a vision of building his own catamaran from scratch. In 2014 the construction started by building a shipyard in Vadstena, Sweden, far over hundred kilometers from the nearest coastline. In 2017 S/Y Tossan entered the water for the first time and has since evolved into the fantastic yacht it is today. It has seen three different riggs, from experimental wingsails, to junk rigs, to today’s conventional rig. The first two were created by own design but didn’t meet the expected performance and simplicity to sail with and was therefore replaced. Currently located in Alvor, Portugal, S/Y Tossan has sailed from Sweden to Portugal with a single-person crew.
